Black Swallowtail

Some of you may recall that in New York we were growing parsley in our window boxes and we discovered what are called "parsley worms". Actually these are pretty yellow and black caterpillars (See pic here) that become black swallowtail butterflies. Not the commonest butterfly.

Well, we became rather attached to our little friends and after they ate all our parsley we started buy bunches and leaving it out for them. Then, one day, they were gone. We discovered two small cocoons attached to our window boxes and read that these guys actually winter over and come out in the Spring!

Well, meanwhile we moved to Vermont. We brought the boxes with us and just hoped our little guys would make it, against all odds. This morning we were out front on our porch cheering on the Vermont City Marathon runners going by and I decided to water the plants. I noticed that there was a very pretty and rather lethargic butterfly on my sedum plant. I showed Steve and Immediately we realized this was our brand spanking new black swallowtail. His cocoon was gone and this is a rather unusual butterfly here. So, there you have it. Welcome to Vermont, pal!
